Yep. Recipes with Coca-Cola is a thing in the South!

I mean, after all, it is an Atlanta product. The company has been headquartered there since its founding in 1892.

Cola has found its way to recipes from marinades and sauces, to pulled pork, ribs, beans and even desserts and if you want the real deal, the bottled version is still the best in my humble opinion, even better when you have access to cane sugar based Mexican Coke.

This pork roast uses that same combination of good ole cola soft drink and dry onion soup mix we love on a beef roast, and the same as that beef roast that is so delicious, so is a pork loin done the same way.

Yes, Southerners like to cook with cola - which of course includes things like 7-up and Dr Pepper and root beer, of course - because we all know that the word cola covers all beverage bases in the South.

I love slow cooker "pulled chicken" because of its versatility. Not only is it good piled on rolls and buns, but its great rolled up in tortillas, stuffed into taquitos, tacos or burritos, or if you're trying to reduce carbs a bit, piled up in lettuce cups and topped with coleslaw or for barbecue pizza.

There's a roast blazing across the interwebs and the world of Pinterest called "Mississippi Roast," and if you google it, you'll find it everywhere. It's the roast that broke the internet.

In the beginning of making this, like most others, I had no idea where the recipe began, or even how the recipe got the name Mississippi attached to it, because best I could figure, somebody who threw it together one day must have just happened to be from Mississippi.

Well, I'm here to set the record straight on that!

I know, I know... as I write this it's supposed to be Fall, well... according to the calendar at least, that is.

Although we got another nice blast of slightly cooler air again this week here in the Deep South, blink and we're right back into mid to upper-80 degree temps during the days and, well... it's still hurricane season for us anyway. It's pretty much still summer here, far as we're concerned.

The nice parts of summer though, that we love so much here - beautiful blue, sunny skies and warm temperatures - but with that highly coveted lower humidity. Finally come out of the house without melting, nice to be outdoors weather!

Barbecue Pork Chops


While the idea of a peachy or Coca-cola barbecue sauce is certainly not unique to me, this mixture is one that came to me one day when trying to think of something to do with pork chops and utilize the slow cooker, since so many of y'all are fans of the crockpot. I opened the fridge, saw a can of Coca-Cola Classic and this peach butter and voila, sounded good to me!

This Creole Crockpot Chicken recipe was born out of me still trying to learn to love my crockpot, especially for chicken.

I'm a low and slow oven kinda gal, and you see, chicken in a slow cooker, even dark meat chicken, that goes longer than it should, well... it can easily transform to the shredded stage, kinda like pulled chicken.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Pulled chicken is still good.

Coke Salad. The Amazing Coca-Cola Salad. Cherry Cola Salad. Fruit salad embedded in cherry Jello. Congealed Salad.

It's known by many names, but it's that last term that tends to garner harsh judgment toward the old gelatin encased salads. It's name comes, of course, from that fact that the contents - be they fruit or vegetables - are thickened, or congealed, into gelatin. I'm not sure why congealed salads fell out of favor, and all but disappeared from the holiday table. Maybe it was the term "congealed" that made them sound un-appetizing, but really, although some were made using a bit of shredded vegetables, most are made with fruit, and are simply fruit salads encased in Jello.

I represented POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice in the POM Wonderful Recipe Battle with a Take 2 rematch against another blogger representing Coach's Oats. The recipes were required to be both savory and summertime BBQ related, and make use of both products.

I have certainly shared my love of POM Wonderful, it's amazing antioxidant properties and great taste, both straight up out of the bottle and as an ingredient in beverages and cooking, but Coach's Oats were new to me. Well, I know that some of you are big fans of steel cut oats, so I tell ya, these are definitely worth a look y'all. Imagine a 100% whole grain oatmeal with the texture of steel cut, that is stovetop ready in 5 minutes, and can also be microwaved! Yep! Not 30 to 45 minutes - but only 5 minutes - thanks to a special process called Cracked n' Toasted™.

This roast beef made with good ole Coca-Cola, came about thanks to the great folks behind the Deep South Dish Facebook family who have given me encouragement to maybe step outside of the oven a bit and make use of this handy appliance. While I do have a scattered few slow cooker recipes up here, I have just never been a big user of one.

A baked ham is a southern holiday staple. My Mama used to make ham one of two ways. One was with this absolutely marvelous glaze produced by using simply one ingredient - classic cola. Ham and cola. How much more old-fashioned and southern can you get than that? The other was baked in a plain brown paper bag, studded with pineapples and cloves.

A stepped-up version of Swiss Steak, Creole Smothered Steak can use either cube steaks, which have already been tenderized, or other beef steaks such as chuck or round steak which is generally less expensive, but also leaner cuts of beef and definitely needing tenderizing.
