Dolly's Stone Soup

There are many stories of the origins of the folk tale of Stone Soup, and it seems to cross many cultures as well, but essentially it centers around the tale of a hungry traveler who arrives in a village where the residents don't seem to want to share their food.

The traveler goes to a stream, fills a pot with water and drops a stone into the water - promising the stone will result in a very special soup.

Cabbage Soup Round-up

Cabbage Soup Round-up

I love cabbage cooked all kinds of different ways, but I especially love cabbage central soups.

Unfortunately, my husband aka The Cajun, isn't as big a fan of it as me, meaning when I make any kind of cabbage dish, well... it's all for me.

That doesn't stop me though y'all, and neither should it stop you.

If you love a certain dish the rest of your family isn't interested in, I say treat yourself occasionally and make it. Just for you. The rest of the family can get along just fine on leftovers or sandwiches, trust me.

Old-Fashioned Vegetable Cabbage Soup

As I write this post, we are just coming off of the Thanksgiving holiday and I am finally coming out of my food coma! Although there is plenty of turkey and ham served, we Southerners do tend to include a lot of carb heavy sides. Foods that we love and expect for the holidays.

By the time that Monday after Thanksgiving rolls around, I find myself craving vegetables and if you're a regular to the site, you already know that I am a nut for all kinds of cabbage, so let's combine the two!

Unstuffed Cabbage Roll Soup

A filling and satisfying cabbage soup made with a beef stock and tomato with V8 base, ground beef, turkey or sausage, and served over rice, with flavor that is reminiscent of an unstuffed cabbage roll.

There's a lot to be said for cabbage soup. For those of us who love cabbage, it's an easy way to prepare it, it's tasty and filling. I have several versions here on the blog, including my interpretation of the one that's been around forever, and is known as zero point, diet soup and free soup, and made popular by Weight Watchers. With a tomato base and loads of vegetables, it's low cal, diet friendly and filling, making it a favorite diet soup, although it's pretty well loved by all cabbage lovers.

Cajun Cabbage Stew

There isn't anything Earth shattering about this stew. It's just a good ole belly filling stew for cabbage lovers like me, and in fact, if you add in a little bit more broth in the second stage of cooking, you'll have a perfectly acceptable cabbage soup. I've used a variety of meats - andouille, ground beef, ground pork, Italian sausage, chorizo and even leftover brisket, but I like the ground beef and andouille combo the best.

Ham and Cabbage Soup

Ham and Cabbage Soup

Soon as Southern fall and winter weather fluctuates from flip-flops back to jackets, I instantly want a good warming soup and I love experimenting with different combinations.

This one came about from having some leftover holiday ham and cabbage that I needed to use up, and knowing I had a frozen ham hock I could use to flavor the soup base. While I bake hams all year, I don't bake them often enough to have a big ham bone available, but smoked pork hocks make such a great flavoring stand-in for a ham bone for soups and beans, that they really should be a freezer staple. They certainly are for me!

Sausage and Sweet Potato Soup with Blackeye Peas

This fantastic soup was inspired by a recipe I saw while flipping through an old cookbook of mine, Is It Soup Yet? - A Cookbook for Soup Lovers. Actually it's a 1998 cookbook and not really all that old, but I guess in terms of a cookbook, it's practically vintage these days.

When I saw the combination of sweet potatoes with sausage in a soup, I have to say I was intrigued. Y'all already know I am pretty much a soup kinda gal anyway, but I have to say I absolutely adored this one. It will definitely be one for the regular rotation of favorite soups in my kitchen. The smoked sausage, sweet potato and black-eyed peas really are a fantastic combination of complimentary flavors I think you'll love.

Leek and Cabbage Soup with Andouille Sausage

Who knew that the combination of cabbage with leeks made such a great soup?! Throw in some andouille sausage and the flavor just really pops.

I had a head of cabbage in the fridge and was in the grocery store the other day when I decided to grab a bunch of leeks, knowing they would make their way into some kind of soup with the cabbage. Once I got started with a basic mirepoix of carrot, onion, celery - and of course the leeks - I thought smoked sausage would make a nice compliment to it. Despite the simplicity of this soup, this was a highly flavorful and just simply delicious soup.
